Scotland Gift Experiences

What are the best place(s) to buy gifts of truly Scottish or UK style/culture?
I am an international student who has just finished my study in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK and returning my home country soon(China). My parents want me to buy some really nice gifts/souvenirs for my folks & friends back home. And they make pretty clear that
1)the gifts should be the representative of Scottish or UK characteristics/culture.
2)It would be even nicer if it does not cost much money for each item. (I guess 40 pounds will be considered as too much for one item)
I will start doing some serious traveling around Scotland & other area in UK for my nation-wide, esp Scotland-wide, gift shopping, So before setting off, I am here to call for the knowledge, experience and advice of all the Yahoo Community who might be into this question to share your ideas here as to what I should buy and where I should go buy them.
Thank everybody in advance!
There are lots of shops on the royal mile in edinburgh leading up to the castle, try the edinburgh wool mill for tartan, you want shortbread, maybe some pictures, edinburgh rock is a favourite.
Maybe go to some of the museums and you’ll find plenty of gifts and trinkets there!
try to go to a brewery and buy some whiskey!
Hope this helps!
