One of the many unexpected ways in which the Internet has changed our lives is in our personal musical expression. Availability of what we hear is no more determined by a handful of music industry executives who may or may not share our tastes. The Musical how it produced, how it was sold, and how it is understood, exchange, and music fans are the beneficiaries.
These days, how many of us to hear a song in heavy rotation on radio, then head of the record store to plunk $ 17.99 for CD of the song (with lots of other songs we can not or will not listen)? We are actually likely to hear something for the first time digitally, perhaps through a link referred to us by a friend with similar tastes or a YouTube video that all the world seems to speak. Maybe we stop with regularity on sites like GarageBand.com or browse a gallery CSS to hear the latest indie music and compare our views of it with others. The music industry is becoming a democracy wide open.
This was a godsend for musicians. Now, rather than waiting and hoping and praying for a record deal, a band can produce and distribute his music on his own. As beginners, they can download on sites like Indie-music.com, in the hope of attracting fans. As buzz grows, they could develop their own website, allowing fans to discover more of their work. The best part is that all this can be accomplished with little investment. Posting on YouTube or independent music sites are often free, and even software for development and improvement of a website, like WordPress, is available for free download. Then when something really takes off, the group may well find the record companies to contact them!
Even ten years ago, who would have guessed that a band like Radiohead would allow huge fans pay what they have chosen download an album or a dowdy spinster Scottish Susan Boyle would like to reach millions with her voice? The whole spectrum of music, Internet has allowed us to find, share and enjoy songs and artists specific to our tastes as never before.
